Bizarre DUI Arrests For February, 2009

Sometimes DUI arrests can be anything but routine. Here are some recent DWI arrests that made headlines across the country:

Partially Undressed Driver Passed Out At Green Traffic Light

In Tucson, Ariz., police found a young woman passed out behind the wheel of a running car stopped at a green light. When an officer approached the car, he noticed the woman's dress was pulled up above her waist and her underwear was pulled down.

The Daily Wildcat reported the officer knocked on the window in an attempt to wake the woman, and when unsuccessful he opened the door of the car and shook the woman's arm. The officer reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol when he opened the car door. A mostly empty bottle of rum was also seen inside the vehicle.

The woman awoke after about two minutes and was asked to pull up her underwear and pull down her dress. As she was adjusting her clothing, the car rolled forward. The officer reached inside the car and put it into park. After the car was stopped, the woman reportedly asked the officer what the problem was.

Upon questioning, the woman is said to have admitted that she had been drinking, but refused to take a field sobriety test. She was arrested for suspicion of DUI and taken to the University of Arizona Police Department station for a breathalyzer test. She registered blood alcohol content readings of .19 and .17 and was charged with DUI-Impaired to the slightest degree, DUI-BAC greater than .08, Extreme DUI-BAC greater than .15, minor under 21 operating a vehicle with liquor in the body and obstructing traffic.

Drunk Driver Allegedly Creates New Drive-Thru at Arby’s

Employees at an Arby's restaurant in Boulder, Colorado, recently found a hole in the side of the building as they opened the refrigerator door. Police explained to them the hole had been caused by a drunk driver.

Colorado Daily reported a driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI, careless driving and failing to present proof of insurance at approximately 2 a.m. after crossing a median, crashing through a glass bus shelter and crashing her car into the side of the restaurant.

Alleged Drunk Driver Pleads, "Don't Tell My Mother"

In Hawaii, a woman's boyfriend was called at approximately 3:45 a.m. to pick her up from a party because she was too intoxicated to drive. When he arrived to retrieve her, she reportedly got into her car and sped away down a dead-end street before he could stop her.

A short time later, the woman smashed into and all the way through the house at the end of the street, ending up on the home's back patio.

The Star Bulletin reported the homeowners were asleep upstairs at the time of the crash and were not injured. They awoke and went downstairs to find the woman lying on the ground beside the car. She reportedly told them she was sorry for driving into their house and begged them not to tell her mother.

After failing a field sobriety test, the woman was arrested for suspicion of DUI and transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
