Atlanta DUI

Atlanta is a city with lots of roads and a big interstate system, but if you're arrested for drunk driving on any of these you could face some serious consequences.

Georgia drunk driving laws call for a long list of penalties even if you are facing only your first arrest. However, you have lots of options when it comes to protecting your rights and your future. For many people facing these charges the first stop is with a local DUI defense lawyer.

Atlanta Drunk Driving: What Are the Consequences

The list of consequences for even your first DUI conviction is longer than Peachtree Street.

Georgia DUI laws have a hands-on approach that requires anyone convicted of drunk driving attend alcohol classes and perform community service. This is in addition to fines, jail time, driver's license suspension and probation.

It's important to keep in mind that these are minimums. Depending on your charges and record you could face additional penalties. A first DUI offense includes:

  • $300-1,000 in fines
  • 10 days - 1 year in jail
  • 1 year probation
  • 1 year driver's license suspension
  • Minimum 40 hours community service
  • Completion of alcohol and driving classes.

However, a second offense within 5 years ratchets these penalties up significantly. At this point, you could lose your license for 3 years and face at least 90 days in jail. Once you're out, you'll owe at least 30 days of community service.

Also, if you refuse to take a breathalzyer test during your stop you may lose your license for one year.

These penalties do not included any additional consequences that may stem from your drunk driving charges. With a DUI on your record you may find it difficult to get work or even retain your current job, particularly if you operate machinery or drive as part of your work.
